Going Green - 5 Tips to Help Make Your Home Eco-friendly

Perhaps you have seen commercials about doing your part to save the environment. You may have been wanting to help, but for some reason haven't yet. Then one day something changes that. It could be that the commercial gets through, or maybe it's a school project that your child has to complete.

Regardless of the how or why, you find yourself ready to do your part and become more eco-friendly. You may think that 'going green' is hard, but small steps can make a difference. Here are 5 tips to help you on your way.

Switch from a plastic bag to a canvas or cloth one.

One of the easiest things you can do is stop using plastic bags and start using cloth or canvas ones. Some stores sell them with their logo printed on it. They are low cost and easy to maintain.

Next time you head to a store that sells cloth bags, buy at least two. Use them to carry your items out to your car. The next time you go to the store, take your old cloth bags and buy two more. Keep repeating this until you have enough to carry out any size order. These bags can be used anywhere and are washable.

Change out your light bulbs.

The old light bulbs in your lamp or ceiling fan may be cheaper when you buy them, but they don't last very long. Switching out those light bulbs to CFL bulbs will not only save you money in the long run but last longer and are better for the environment.

(CFL stands for compact fluorescent. These are the bulbs that look like swirls. They also typically last 8 times longer than standard bulbs, though the length varies with the type and manufacturer.)

Turn off the lights

When you leave a room, turn off the lights. Again this not only saves money for you, it also saves energy. This means a better impact on the environment as well.

Create recycling bins.

One great way to 'go green' is to recycle. Buying 3 rubber or plastic bins is a great place to start. Label each one for a different type of material that will be recycled. The most common are metal, paper, and plastic. Be sure to check with the company that picks up the trash to see if they have recycling bins they can provide to you.

Start a compost pile.

Gardeners know the value of compost. It's a great way to return valuable nutrients to the soul and help your garden grow. It also reduces the amount of waste that goes into the landfill. Some typical items in a compost pile are food scraps, peels, and sawdust. You can find out more information on creating a compost pile and what should and should not go into it.

Helping to save the environment doesn't have to be an overwhelming experience. Small changes in our daily lives can make a big impact. The tips I've shared are just a few that you can start using today.

Education is the Key to Green Living

Green living is on everyone's mind these days but do you really know what it means to live green? It's more than simply separating the trash into different bins to be picked up or using energy saving light bulbs. Green living affects every aspect of your life. Making your home more energy efficient is a great way to start living green but there is so much more that you can do. For example, buying fuel efficient vehicles, car-pooling or simply cutting back on how often you drive by walking whenever it's practical are all part of living green.

Living green also includes the following areas of your life:

Food
Clothing
Personal hygiene products
Cleaning supplies
Drinking water
Toys
Laundry products
Pet products

Basically, every aspect of your life can reflect green living in some way. Each time you go shopping for anything you should know what's green and what's not. Learn how to host a green dinner party or how to barbeque the green way. The more you learn, the more of an impact you can make when it comes to reducing the amount of resources you use.

Education is the key to green living because it's the only way a person can learn what it truly means to live green. You need to learn about the problems the world faces, what caused them and what can be done to help. The more information you have, the easier it will be for you to make decisions that have a positive effect on the environment. When you're ready to learn more about green living, there are many online resources that can provide the information you need.

Green Furniture - Tips and Advice For Your Use

Many people begin home renovations when summer rolls around because that's when they have the most free time. A fresh coat of paint, clean carpeting and some new furniture are a few ways to achieve a new look at home, and there are ways to do it by keeping the environment in mind. Below are a few tips for picking out green furniture for your home.

Where to shop:

Believe it or not, Craigslist and E-bay are great places to look for furniture. A simple way to keep the environment in mind is to purchase used furniture and keep it from ending up in the landfills.
If you're not into recycling used items, major retailers like IKEA use eco-friendly practices at their facilities so you can purchase their products guilt free.
You can also check your local area for smaller, locally-owned retailers that offer unique furniture options.
A great example of a good place to buy furniture is Herman Miller. Companies such as Herman Miller have energy efficient facilities and use recycled materials when making their products.

What to look for

When shopping for furniture, it's a great idea to do a little bit of research before buying anything.
Make sure you look into the manufacturing processes of the companies you want to buy furniture from: Do they use recycled materials? Where are they getting their resources from?
Look for furniture made with materials like bamboo and cork, which are more environmentally friendly than other alternatives that require destroying forests.

Be creative

Sometimes when you think it's time for a new coffee table, all you really need is a spruce up.
If you're into being crafty and trying new things, give your furniture a fresh coat of paint or a new staining. Using low-VOC products, you can easily transform your old furniture and save money at the same time.

Well, this is a huge accomplishment and we want to encourage you and make the task easier. Are you ready? Well, here are some easy but extremely useful green tips that you can implement right away. Tips that will make the world better for all of us.

Make small changes now. After all, every bit helps, right? Even the most simplistic green tips can improve our world and our lives. For instance, let's start with your computer. By simply unplugging it whenever you're done with it, you will not only save a lot of energy, but your electrical bills will go down too. Plus, if you do this with other electronic devices, like your TV, you will see even more savings and help conserve more energy.

Care about your health. Another change you can make is to stop smoking now. By smoking, you are not only harming yourself but you're harming our environment as well. After all, each puff of smoke emits harmful poisons that effect not only the smoker's bodies but our environment as well. By stopping this vicious cycle you will expand your life and improve the air quality of those you love and care about.

Conserve water. This may seem simple but if more people did this, we would be much better off. By turning the water off when you brush your teeth or wash the dishes, you can save our precious resource - water. ln addition, you should be creative with water usage. For instance, if you have a fish tank, instead of throwing the water out, use it to water your plants or garden (which provides great fertilizer).

Recharge it baby. Another great green tip is to use rechargeable batteries and reusable bags. Not only will these save some trees but, you'll actually improve the quality of your life. You see, with more tress available, we'll have less carbon monoxide, wildlife will have more food, and we'll be better protected from the elements (rain, wind, etc). Be energy efficient. For instance, you can replace all your regular light bulbs with fluorescent ones. Or, you can obtain bank statements or bill statements online. By doing this, you will save a lot of energy and millions of trees each year.

Green Wedding Tips

Here are tips for couples to consider who want to create a more sustainable wedding day:

o Have a daytime wedding and have at least part of it outdoors in the sunshine or early evening using natural light. When it gets darker, use soy-based or beeswax candles to gently illuminate your tables and LED lighting which is more energy efficient.

o Choose 100% recycled content, processed chlorine free paper for invitations, place cards, save-the-date cards, programs and menus. You might consider just printing one menu card per table and placing it on a small stand. Similarly, print one program per couple, if you wish to have some type of program. There are many lovely green invitation options to choose from and you can also design great custom invitations with a favorite graphic designer. Find one who can also do beautiful hand letterpress work. Paperless invitations or save the date cards are another eco-friendly option, though they are not right for everyone.

o Work with caterers who prepare food using local and organic produce, humanely raised beef and poultry, and sustainable seafood. Ask caterers not to use polystyrene, ask that they recycle and that they work hard to generate as little waste as possible as well as use eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Always choose rental items over disposable ones. Make your event lower waste by making this decision. Excess food can be donated to a local shelter or food bank. They will be delighted and so will you!

o Gorgeous centerpieces are the key to a lovely table! It is possible to do them sustainably and here is how we like to do it. Our floral designers use organic, locally grown flowers, fruits or veggies to create masterful centerpieces. We also incorporate many vintage and antique pieces to create elegant vignettes that are unlike any others that your guests will have seen. Choosing living plants rather than cut flowers is another option that can be done with great style. We donate centerpieces to local nursing homes after our events so that they may be enjoyed again. You can also donate them to shelters or churches in lower income areas where they can be reused and enjoyed for another wedding. Be sure to coordinate this in advance!

o If you wish to wear vintage clothing and jewelry, or "green fibers" such as hemp, silk, or organic cotton, it is easy to find chic eco-friendly bridal wear. There are many designers working with eco-friendly fibers these days.

o Consider acoustic music, at least for the wedding and cocktails. It is not difficult to find wonderful local guitarists, harpists, and string ensembles to play and the cost is usually a lot less than hiring a band.

o Use photographers that use digital photography, which is much more eco-friendly than film.

Deciding to have a green wedding provides you with a wonderful opportunity to educate your guests, should you choose to do so. There are many ways to model sustainability to your guests without offending people who may have different views or priorities. Some people prefer to shout their green philosophies from the rooftops while others prefer the more subtle approach. Much of what you may decide to do to make your event sustainable can be "back of the house", so the choice to share the sustainability factor is yours.

Green Weddings Tips - 5 Ideas For the Eco-Chic Bride

What could make your big day even more special, beautiful and memorable? Showing that you're stylish, eco-friendly and hip with these five tips for a fabulous green wedding.

1. Create inspired arrangements of cacti and succulents instead of using cut flowers.

Does the world really need another bridal bouquet of roses and peonies? We think not! Especially since eighty percent of cut flowers are imported all the way from South America, where they're grown with harmful pesticides. Cacti and succulent arrangements are a unique, stylish, and eco-friendly alternative. If you're DIY-inclined, you can create your own succulent centerpieces weeks before the wedding - they require minimal care and watering. And afterwards, you can replant them in your garden, where they'll take root and grow alongside the marriage. Awwwww!

2. Serve delicious local, organic, sustainable foods.

Organic/sustainable food isn't just good for the Earth - it actually tastes better too! Treat your guests to real foods that are healthy, pesticide-free and locally grown. Search online for a caterer who offers organic menu options. If you don't find one in your area, get creative: We know one Massachusetts bride who convinced four different vendors from her local farmer's market to cater her wedding with fresh salads and veggie dishes, locally raised roasted chicken, farm-fresh fruits and home-baked pies! Even if you don't go totally organic, limit the number of meat items on your menu, and choose sustainably farmed, low-mercury fish and seafood.

3. Have a super-sweet hometown wedding.

The number one cause of gargantuan carbon footprints for weddings? Travel! Whether your guests arrive by car or by plane, the miles they rack up en route to your big day can add up quickly. A typical destination wedding causes 50 tons of carbon dioxide (eek!) to be emitted into the atmosphere. Choosing an event location near where most of your guests live will help cut down on their travel. And you can reduce your impact even further by buying carbon offsets to create a zero carbon wedding. Who says you need an exotic locale to make your dream day special? Create a stylish hometown wedding that incorporates unique elements from you or your fiancee's childhood.

4. Choose a vintage engagement ring and post-consumer gold wedding bands.

There is already enough gold in the world to satisfy the demands of the jewelry industry for the next 50 years. Meanwhile, both gold and diamond mining (even of "conflict-free" diamonds) continue to poison the environment and global water supply with waste and toxins like cyanide and mercury. You can be part of the "elegant solution" by choosing a vintage engagement ring. Vintage and used engagement rings are often priced more reasonably than the new rings sold in retail stores, and come in a dazzling array of styles. And when it comes time to choose wedding bands, look for rings made from post-consumer white, yellow and rose gold.

5. Buy a gently used wedding dress, recycled bridesmaids dresses, or preowned bridal shoes.

The secondary market for wedding items is booming! Smart brides who don't want to sacrifice style and luxury are finding gently used wedding dresses online for half their retail price. And wedding recycling doesn't just save you money - it also reduces your wedding's environmental impact. By buying gently used wedding items, you'll avoid the consumption of natural resources and carbon emissions associated with the manufacture and transport of new items. And you can even sell your used wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses and accessories again after the wedding!

To buy or sell a gently used wedding dress, gently used bridesmaids dresses, vintage engagement ring or used wedding ring for free - absolutely no commissions or fees - visit http://www.RecycledBride.com

How to Successfully Market Green Products - The Green Value Test

Joel Makover published recently an interesting analysis of the different types of green consumers according with their purchasing behavior, lifestyle, demographics, psychographics, date of birth or just where they live (I made up the last two!). The Makover categorization reads like the four stages of a new relationship: Committed, Conflicted, Confused and Cynical.

His simplified categorization into four groups is interesting and easier to understand from an intuitive standpoint than the segmentation from the Natural marketing Institute Naturalites or The Roper Organization Grousers. At EverQuest Design we looked at these simplified categories with demographics and psychographics attributes to identify market potential and how they could be reached. We have applied this methodology with clients such as Cirque du Soleil to define target markets for green or recycled products (bags and accessories) they wished to develop, launch and market.

First and foremost marketers should be made aware that even in the best scenario green consumers only represent 45% of total markets. At least half of consumers just do not care about global warming; the environment, recycling and possibly never will. There is probably no amount of information that would change their mind about global warming short of actual icebergs floating off the coast of Florida. That's the bad news about green consumers market potential.

How about the other half who do care about sustainability? The good news is that true green consumers (15-20%) are willing to pay more for green products and are positive influencers to other segments. For the people who have read the The Tipping Point from Malcolm Gladwell (2 million copies and counting) you could look at the Committed Segment (see Makover) of green consumers as positive influencers and mavens. These consumers are found roaming green and sustainability blogs (TreeHugger, Greenbiz) when they are not writing on their own blog. They influence others through their actions and transmit and share information on all aspects of sustainability from clean energy to composting or promoting a ban on single-use plastic bags. The Committed in the Makover categories are the strongest environmental advocates.

The Conflicted and Confused green consumers represent softer segments that tend to be on the fence and can quickly convert to Cynical when confronted with blatant greenwashing. The best ways to reach green consumer vary according to product categories and industry.

Our experience in reaching and marketing successfully to green consumers is based on a simple formula. Green consumers look for Green-Value attributes in a product. To apply a sometimes overused but still effective approach: Does your product or service allow me to reduce, reuse or recycle the earth's resource to live a more sustainable life? Consumers intuitively apply the Green-Value Test to any product claiming to be green and vote with their dollars. From clean energy (using less fossil fuel) to laundry detergent(biodegradable) or recycled packaging there is an evaluation in the consumers' mind about the green claim and its actual effect on the environment. Obviously green claims and a more reliable eco labeling system is necessary to minimize greenwashing but consumers are not as gullible as some companies seem to think.

As eco-seals proliferate, so do doubts: The Wall Street Journal recently published an article stating that "It's too easy to be green", The Wall Street Journal, backs it up by citing the fact there are about 300 "eco-labels" in the marketplace, competing to be the environmental equivalent of a Good Housekeeping seal of approval. The result: increasing confusion and cynicism among consumers about the veracity of green marketing promises and a growing need for government's regulation setting standard. Eco labeling should enable consumers to ascertain with confidence the Green-Value of a product.

What does it really mean to be green? Is having some recycled content enough, and if so, how much? Is something biodegradable still green if it travels a thousand miles to reach shelves? And if a green product doesn't perform as well as its non-green peers, is it really preferable," asks the article.

We must caution marketers that selling products to the elusive green consumer is never easy. The challenge lies in being able reach the green consumer through green info hubs and passes the Green-Value Test. We have successfully marketed to green consumers by focusing on reaching the Committed where ever they are (Green blogs) and reaching out with true Green-Value product propositions. The Green and eco-product market has tremendous potential for marketers willing to be creative both in product design as in marketing strategies.

Living a Green Life

In the beginning when I started writing this article I wanted to write about sustainable agriculture and industrial agriculture with an aim of making it very much informative to the readers. But the terms like industrial and sustainable simply don't match together. Sustainable is a term that can be applied to every aspects of our life. So why only sustainable agriculture. We can in fact have a very sustainable life and nourish our life cycle. The principle is that in taking what we need presently we give it all back to support our life so that there may be plenty for everyone left. This is the most sustainable form of green life.

Activity is just another meaning to industry. It is simply making, consuming, processing, and doing. The term is simply linear and can not be reciprocated. The thinking itself seems to use up all the resources without actually thinking of saving, preserving, renewing or even replacing. It may in fact be said as the direct result of rational science as man is the master of this universe approach to life. We all need to reject this view as we can start moving towards a simpler greener lifestyle. We all can always desire to consume less, do less, and waste less so that will simply leave us worry less. We can in fact enjoy our resources more.

So try being an organic gardener even if you don't understand the basics of it. Go back to basics. Try building a traditional house and not a modern day home. We have to try and understand the risk of living in this world that we have created. We all know that meditation can help improve our life style. The fact is that meditation is one of the natural ways to heal. So if natural ways can help heal us then why not our mother nature. We have already succeeded in our plans of damaging it. Now is the time we start to act and heal it.

We all know there is so much that is going on in agriculture, economics, politics and religion. We are aware of the impacts o our earth and on the global environment. But at the same time we never realize anything. Its just like we don't know anything. We simply act as if we don't know, we don't understand and we don't want to absorb anything.

Everyone of us is simply tuned into this world the way it is. But most of us also have a sympathetic resonance as compared to others, and we need to act. Most of us also feel angry, and depressed towards other tunes, and we certainly are determined to prevail.

The point is that it is too fragile and abstract. It is always very easy to mistake one for other, we may feel that we are completely right but the fact is that we are only half right. We eat healthy food, we use eco friendly bulbs, we do yoga, we also wear mush of the organic clothes but we are still living in a toxic home, we work in toxic industries, we travel in toxic vehicles, and we live in a toxic world. We are still using cell phones, TV, CD, Fridge, Air conditioner and the list may simply go on. We simply need to decide.

Ten Cheap and Easy Tips For Going Green

We all know that our planet is in a danger zone, and it is imperative that the governments of the world act quickly to halt, and reverse, the damage that has already been done to our air, soil and water. But what can you and I do in our busy lives to make a difference? We hear about car pooling, riding bicycles instead of driving and buying energy efficient appliances, but those things are not always possible, and can be expensive too. How about a few simple things you can do at home that won't cost you much, and can even save you money?

Check out these ten cheap and easy tips, so you can help too:

1. Change your toilet paper: Standing forests are harvested to make your toilet paper soft and fluffy. Over 20% of conventional toilet paper comes from old growth and second growth living trees, and chlorine bleach, an environmental toxin, is used to whiten the pulp. Do you really need your toilet paper to be that fluffy, and why on earth must it be white? It is estimated that if every household in the United States replaced just one roll of conventional toilet paper with a roll made from recycled paper, it could save almost half a million trees! And if you buy in bulk (available online too) the price can be about the same as you're paying now.

2. Put a lid on it: When you boil water, say for pasta, put a lid on the pot. When you are boiling water for tea, fill the kettle with just a little bit more than what you need, instead of boiling a full kettle for one cup. It may not seem like much, but if everyone does it (like voting) it will make a significant difference.

3. Unplug: It is estimated that you can save over a thousand pounds of carbon dioxide per year by unplugging the electronic devices in your home while not in use. Don't leave cell phone adapters plugged in when you're done recharging, and unplug toasters, coffee pots etc. when not in use. You can put TVs, DVDs etc. on power strips that are easy to reach. You don't need everything on standby mode while you are at work all day.

4. Check your tire pressure: It is possible to save up to $800 worth of gas per year simply by keeping your tires properly inflated. You use more gas when they are low and that is money out of your pocket, and emissions into the air we all have to breathe.

5. Don't idle your car: How many times have you sat in your car with the engine running, waiting to pick the kids up, or while someone just runs into the store for a quick minute? If it is for more than 30 seconds, turn it off! The exception is in traffic, of course, where that could be unsafe.

6. Air dry clothes whenever possible: The weather is warmer now and you'd be surprised how quick and easy it is to let the sun dry your clothes. For about $12, you can buy a simple folding rack and put it on the patio, by a sunny window, or even just in a corner of the living room overnight. After they are dry, you can fluff towels and T-shirts in the dryer without heat for three or four minutes to soften them up, but you'll find that it is not necessary for much of your laundry. If every household in the United States air dried just ONE load of laundry per year, we could keep 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide out of our atmosphere! This is the equivalent to reducing coal use by 30 million tons each year!

7. Stop using air fresheners full of toxic chemicals: Don't spray more nasty stuff into the air you and your family breathe every day. Look for all natural alternatives (lots available online if your local store doesn't carry any), or try these two simple ideas: sprinkle baking soda on your carpets for an hour or two before vacuuming to absorb odors, and make your own air freshener by putting orange or lemon peels in a pot with two or three cups of water. Add a little cinnamon or a bay leaf or two, and simmer slowly. This adds a lovely scent to your home, naturally.

8. Don't throw your old batteries away: If rechargeable batteries are too pricey for you, save your old batteries in a box or old plastic bag and take them to a recycler once or twice a year. Many of the large hardware chains now have recycling receptacles for batteries. Or call 1-800-8-BATTERY or 1-877-2-RECYCLE to find out where you can recycle near your home.

9. Stop adding kitchen sponges to landfill: I bought a half dozen terry cloth washcloths on sale for 49 cents each. I use one a day and toss it in the laundry when I'm done with it. If you have the time, cut up an old towel (that you were going to throw away or give to the thrift store) and hem the edges. You'll save money too, as these can be washed and re-used for years.

10. Save water: In our house, it takes a long time for the water in the shower or kitchen sink to get warm enough. Instead of letting all that water run down the drain (and pay for it too) we fill up the watering can, the water purifier pitcher, and a medium sized bucket and utilize every drop. The bucket can be used to flush a toilet (just pour about half of the bucket in quickly) or taken outside to water the garden. We've cut our water use almost in half just with this simple step.

All of these tips are simple, quick and easy, and will save you money too. They may seem like small steps, but if we all start with the little things, we'll be better able to tackle the big ones. And remember, every little bit helps!
