Learning to Build Your Own Solar Panel

The exploration of space has been done using solar panels for decades. Solar panels can be used to provide electricity for homes by simplifying this complicated technology.

You can learn to put together a solar panel after acquiring a few things form eBay or a recycling center, and several resources and tools which can be found in your garage. If you have a few dollars, a little free time, and the desire you can easy take on an alternative energy source without having a Masters in workshop or an engineering degree.

You will need to gather together these materials before starting this project: cells that can be connected together, wooden boxing, wiring, plastic paneling, glue, black paint, solder, and a water proof sealant (silicone).

It is important to purchase cells that can be joined one to another. Avoid the cheap ones; instead opt for the ones that already have tabs. The amount of power you expect the panels to generate will determine how many cells you will need to use. You will want to take into consideration that most do it yourself systems will only yield eighty percent of its claimed output.

1. The cells need to be glued into 36 (6x6) series. Then you must join the tabs so that electricity will flow in one direction. Set this onto a backing board and place it in a well insulated box. Use the black paint as finish, a plastic panel to cover the face, and then screw it down and use the silicone to seal it.

2. Connect the solar panel to the storage battery or a series of them, to allow for energy release while the sun is covered over by clouds or it's night. You may opt to have an electrician help you with this part. The entire process will only last one weekend at the most.

3. An area that is not overshadowed by other buildings or trees and faces southward to get the most out of the rays of the sun is needed for mounting the system.

4. Avoid energy loss by insulating the back of the mounted box and all wiring.

Remember that building this type of panel is not about acquiring cheap power; it is about the fact that future generations may very well depend upon the initiatives we set forth today. This can be a fun project or a viable energy alternative for those with a consciousness toward the environment.
