Solar Thermal Energy - What Is It?

With all the buzz around solar energy and green technology the complete uses for this phenomenal resources are overlooked. Thermal energy is a form of kinetic energy which comes from the movement of atoms and molecules in matter. While it seems solar photovoltaic is gaining all the paparazzi attention, solar thermal energy has and continues to quietly and efficiently heat household appliances. But what is it?

Solar Thermal Energy harnesses the energy from the sun for use as a heat source. Like solar photovoltaic collection methods, this is a sustainable green energy source. The most notable difference between thermal and photovoltaic energy lies in the collection method. Photovoltaic energy must first be collected and converted into electricity whereas; thermal energy needs no intermediary process to power an piece of equipment. This is not to say the latter of the two does not require additional assistance, but rather the energy is captured in its raw form and ready to be put to use. How does this work?

Well, it collects and transfers the heat directly to the end source. A transmitter is needed to complete this process and this medium is usually in the form of a fluid. The materials needed to build the transmitters does have some negative carbon footprint effects, however, using solar energy is still far more earth friendly than the use of fossil fuels.

Some appliances will work better for conversion to thermal energy than others. Hot water heaters, back up generators, pool heaters, air conditioners and heating systems and even stoves! The amount of energy needed to use these appliances can be significant. Depending on your location; thermal energy may be all you need to keep your hot water tank heated. Think of the savings on your gas or electric bill!

Before fossil fuels were discovered, humans somehow managed to make a way. Now that our source of energy is dwindling, mankind will once again turn to renewable nature to continue living a life of convenience.
